Beginner Gymnastics for Kids in Petaling Jaya: What Ages 5–7 Learn

Your child does not need to know how to cartwheel before joining a beginner gymnastics class. For many children aged five to seven, the first lesson is a chance to get comfortable with the gym, meet the coach and try movements at their own pace.

At Flykidz in Seksyen 13, Petaling Jaya, the Recreational class is the program listed for ages 5–7. Its activities include creative warm-ups, themed obstacle courses and introductions to basic skills. This guide helps you decide whether it may suit your child and how to prepare for a first visit.

What does a beginner actually learn?

The goal of a first class is to learn the setting and follow coached instructions. The Recreational program introduces skills such as cartwheels, handstands and backward rolls through progressions. Children may also encounter floor, beam, bars and vault activities as the coach chooses suitable tasks for their level. Trying a preparation step counts as participation; a child does not have to complete a full skill on day one.

The program page describes creative warm-ups and colourful weekly themed obstacle courses. These give children different ways to practise movement and listen to instructions. If you want to know exactly what your child will do in a particular session, ask the team when booking, since lesson plans can vary.

Is age five too late to start?

No prior gymnastics experience is required for Flykidz's recreational pathway. A five, six or seven year old can start with the skills they have, and the coach can advise which group fits after seeing them in class. If your child has already taken Kindergym, the Recreational class is the next listed age group. Children new to gymnastics can also ask about joining directly.

Age is a useful starting point, but readiness and prior experience also matter. Tell the team about any previous classes or concerns when you book. There is no need to practise handstands or rolls at home before a trial.

What happens at the first class?

Flykidz offers a free first trial class in Petaling Jaya, subject to booking and availability. According to its trial page, your child joins an age-appropriate class while parents watch from the designated area. The coach can then recommend a suitable group. The Recreational slot is listed as 60 minutes on the Petaling Jaya classes page; confirm the current session time before travelling.

It is fine if your child needs a little time to observe at first. Let the coach know if this is a first group activity or if there is anything that would make the introduction easier. Ask the team directly about accessibility or individual support needs before booking.

What should my child wear and bring?

Choose comfortable, fitted athletic clothing that lets your child move freely. The trial guidance recommends a T-shirt and shorts or a leotard, tied-back hair, and no loose jewellery, hard hair accessories, zips or buttons. Classes are barefoot or in gymnastics socks. Bring a water bottle, and plan to arrive about ten minutes early for first-visit registration.

You do not need to buy special clothing for a first lesson. If you are unsure whether a particular item is suitable, check with the Flykidz team ahead of time.

How do you choose a class in PJ?

When comparing gymnastics classes for a school-age child, ask how beginners are introduced to apparatus, how coaches adapt a task when a child is still learning it, and how parents receive feedback. Check the term schedule, travel route and current places available before making plans.

Flykidz's studio is at No 3, Jalan Bersatu 13/4, Seksyen 13, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. There is one PJ studio; availability and times depend on the current term. See the full program overview for Petaling Jaya if you are deciding between age groups.
